What Does TPMS Mean?

mechanic checking tire pressure

Your Jeep is equipped with a wide range of state-of-the-art safety equipment, including everything from airbag systems to drive assistive technology to TPMS. What does TPMS mean? It stands for “Tire Pressure Monitoring System.” Each tire is embedded with a sensor, which transmits your air pressure readings to your onboard computer. If the air pressure is higher or lower than the recommended standard, you’ll receive an alert on your dashboard. This keeps you safer on the roads while ensuring that you get the best handling and fuel economy possible. Let’s dive a little deeper into the question, “What does TPMS mean?”

Why Do I Need a Tire Pressure Monitoring System?

So, why is a Tire Pressure Monitoring System such a valuable feature on a Jeep? Your tire air pressure is vital to your vehicle’s performance. If your air pressure is lower or higher than recommended, you could suffer from the following:

  • Poor traction
  • Decreased load-carrying capability
  • A flat tire or blowout
  • Poor fuel economy

And luckily, the TPMS keeps tabs on your tires for you as you navigate Branford and New Haven. Your dashboard will show either a tire symbol with an exclamation mark in the middle or a glowing TPMS sign. That’s your signal to head to a gas station or dealership to top off your tires.

What are the Benefits of Proper Tire Inflation?

Many Milford drivers know that an underinflated tire can quickly turn into a flat, but that’s not the only reason to keep your tires in good shape. A properly inflated tire has a number of benefits:

  • Reduced tread movement increases the lifespan of the tire
  • Reduced rolling resistance increases overall vehicle efficiency
  • Increased water dispersion decreases the likelihood of hydroplaning
